FOOTBALL GLORY: The Sensible Soccer Challenger that Birthed Croteam
Croteam's first game, Football Glory on the Amiga, looked a LOT like Sensible Soccer -- however it add quite a few new techniques and a lot of chaos into the mix. Here's a big look at the game as well as publishers Black Legend, and how it all led up to a certain PC classic named Serious Sam. Enjoy!

I love this retrospective on the beginnings of Croteam. I always wondered where they came from. I had been a PC user in the US since the early 90s but I never heard of Croteam until I saw and played the Serious Sam demo in the summer of 2000. I was completely blown away by the game! I couldn't believe how incredibly fun even that test demo was, especially when multiple people were playing! I've purchased and played through all of the PC Serious Sam games through the years but the original game (both First and Second encounters) are still the ones I love the most!

Oh my God I loved this game! I can actually still remember buying the DOS edition from Game in Loughborough purely because it had Geoff Hurst and the World Cup on the front of it. Fantastic video, Kim. Brings back a ton of memories. I had a Sega arcade near me in the 90's, and I only ever went on the free play days where you'd pay a fiver to get in and all the machines were free vend. I remember playing a great many of the games in this video, it was an amazing experience and a very special era of gaming. The only problem with free play days is the arcade is always packed and you'd be waiting ages to get on some games. Daytona USA always seemed to have all eight players constantly, and there was always a big queue for Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Tekken 2. Virtua Fighter was never all that popular, and I wasn't a fan either so that machine was often available. I mostly played the shooting games, HotD, Gunblade NY, Virtua Cop, Time Crisis. Gunblade was especially fun on free play days cause you could play 2-player on your on and have a gun in each hand, without it costing a fortune. VOOT was my absolute favourite though, holy hell was that game amazing with the big screen and dual stick controls. The machine was never hugely popular but I loved it and played it an absolute ton. Easily the arcade game I've spent the most time with. I feel privileged to have grown up in this era, when arcades were a thing and they were a step above anything you could get at home. If you were a gamer in the 90's, going to an arcade and playing these incredible games was almost a religious experience. I hate to be all "you had to be there" but, yeah..

A more in-depth look on the subject of one of my favourite Kim videos. In many ways, I consider the Sensible Soccer ports on the SNES to be more polished versions of Football Glory (sans the humour) that actually predated Football Glory (Super Football Glory Zero V1 & V1.1 perhaps), with their slightly bigger graphics and the fact that if you play the American version of Sensi V1.2 (Championship Soccer '94), it's probably as fast as Football Glory.

A very biased account, clearly fuelled by your bitter hatred of the man himself. For example, you failed to mention how Sugar revolutionised the word-processor market. Many top authors and journalists loved this kit and typed out their copy on a PCW8256. Then there was the PC1512 which out-IBMd IBM - this machine took a massive 30% of the European market share and truly brought computing to the masses - it literally changed the world. But instead, you prefer to revel in the failure to the GX4000 - I could feel you wringing your hands with glee at that failure. Tell me, if you were a manufacturer in Sugar's shoes, would you have a 100% success rate? Ironically you see the comedy value of the Rowan, Smith & Jones sketch portraying hi-fi snobs, completely oblivious to the fact that your sneering attitude throughout the rest of the video was exactly the same!
